Renewables: Cheaper, Faster, Essential
The Trump administration has falsely claimed that wind and solar electricity are more expensive than fossil fuels and nuclear power. Trump is quoted as saying,
“We’re getting rid of the falsely named renewables. By the way, they’re a joke. They don’t work. They’re too expensive.”
Donald Trump named Chris Wright as Energy Secretary. Chris Wright is an oil executive. He is quoted as saying, “Adding more wind and solar to the grid have one guaranteed effect: they make electricity more expensive.”
Neither Donald Trump nor Chris Wright know what they’re talking about
POLITICO did an analysis using data from the US Energy Information Administration. It showed states that use more renewable energy have lower cost electric bills for their residents. In the last few years, 30% of Texas’ electricity has come from green energy. POLITICO’s data found that in June 2025, Texas’ power cost 10.25 cents per kilowatt hour. This was cheaper than 10 out of 13 other southern states that it was compared to. In fact, states with larger shares of renewables in their energy mix consistently have cheaper electricity costs!
And thanks to AI and their large data centers, our power grid is under stress. There are also the impacts of climate change. The summers are hotter. We need more electricity than what we currently have the capability to produce. Virginia is part of PJM Interconnection which is a power grid that includes 13 states and DC. On June 24, 2025, PJM Interconnection reported it was using 97.1% of its available power. This was despite the fact that some big users of electricity were paid not to use power during this time.
Our grid desperately needs more generation capacity or there will be more brownouts and blackouts. Being on the House’s Energy and Commerce committee, Morgan Griffith should know this. Trump and Wright would like us to build new natural gas power plants. But that isn’t an option in the short term. Currently, natural gas turbines take 5 to 7 years to get! We can’t wait that long if we want continuous, reliable power. And let’s not forget how long the mountain valley pipeline project has taken in our area of the Ninth District.
Renewables are faster to get up and running, solar being the quickest. Some solar projects only take about a year from start to generating power.
And, of course, when a resource like electricity is scarce, it gets more expensive. Data centers are using huge amounts of electricity, making the cost of electricity sky rocket for the rest of us. In 2024, AEP disconnected 43,000 Virginia customers from their electricity because they couldn’t afford to pay. Our lawmakers need to ensure the big tech companies, Meta, Amazon, Google pay for these data centers. Hard working Virginians in the Ninth District should not get these costs passed down to our already stressed budgets while corporations get a discount.
We all need reliable, low-cost electricity in the Ninth District. Many in the Ninth rely on electricity for their health. Children with asthma use nebulizers to breath. Adults with COPD need oxygen to relieve their shortness of breath. People with sleep apnea need electricity to run their CPAP. Some kidney patients need it to use their home dialysis. Babies should not be exposed to extremes of temperature. And don’t we all want our toilets to flush? Shouldn’t we all be able to brush our teeth and get our kids a glass of water when they’re thirsty? Morgan Griffith spends much of his time in Washington DC with a municipal water supply. Has he forgotten that the rural population in the Ninth District rely on well pumps?
Is Morgan Griffith Selling Out Virginia's Future?
Trump has used executive order to stop offshore wind power projects. The Big Ugly Bill cancels the tax credits from the Biden administration for renewable projects starting in 2026. Congressman Morgan Griffith supports Donald Trump. He voted for the Big Ugly Bill. He voted for the Ninth District to have higher electricity bills and a less reliable power grid. He voted against people being able to keep their medications refrigerated. He voted to take away our children and grandchildren’s futures by accelerating climate change. Is he in bed with the fossil fuel industry the way the Trump administration is?
According to the Federal Election Commission website, it shows during the 6-month time period of 4-1-2025 to 10-2-2025, Morgan Griffith received $19,500 from the fossil fuel industry and their lobbyists.5 And just think, this is not even an election year.
Adam Murphy will put our pocket books, the health of our planet, and our ability to survive on said planet before fossil fuel companies and the tech companies that are on a race to capitalize on AI.
