Proposed Virginia Redistricting

ADAM MURPHY FOR VIRGINIA’S 9TH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT ISSUES STATEMENT ON PROPOSED VIRGINIA REDISTRICTING: “WE ARE THE FIGHTING 9th

ROANOKE, VA – February 07, 2026 – Adam Murphy, a Democratic candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in Virginia’s competitive 9th Congressional District, shared that he is ready to continue to fight regardless of any potential concerns about the U.S. House map redistricting proposal unveiled by Virginia Democrats on Friday, February 06, 2026.

Democrats in the Commonwealth proposed a map that could provide the party with four additional seats in the effort to push back against President Donald Trump’s redistricting efforts. The proposed map is intended to provide Democrats with a better footing in competitive race districts, but Mr. Murphy noted on Friday that there could be problematic consequences for some regions of Virginia as part of this push. The proposed plan for the 9th Congressional District, where Murphy is running, expands the district from Southwest Virginia (SWVA) towards the Shenandoah Valley and moves some areas of SWVA into the 6th Congressional district.

“I understand this redistricting proposal for Virginia is in reaction to mid-cycle redistricting changes in other states, and I support the need to address the threat those changes pose for our democracy. However, every district and race should be fair,” Murphy said. “The current proposal puts SWVA on the sidelines and will make it harder for residents of the region to have a voice in our Commonwealth.”

Murphy noted that he appreciates that Virginia’s process allows voters to make the decision on the outcome. “I am glad that this is ultimately a choice Virginians must make and is not forced onto the people as we have seen in other states. I wish every state had independent districting that made our elections fair and is something I will fight for on the national level,” Murphy said.

Regardless of the outcome, Murphy says that he is staying in the race for the 9th. “We are already running in the reddest district in Virginia, and I’ve been ready for that challenge since day one. I am committed to representing SWVA and, should the voters approve the map, committed to representing parts of the Shenandoah Valley, as well. For too long, places like SWVA and rural Virginia have been treated as sacrificial, but that doesn't mean we give up. Our residents deserve a representative who hears them and stands up for them, regardless of circumstance. We are the Fighting 9th for a reason, and we are always going to fight for a future we all deserve, no matter what.
