We all deserve Booming Economic Opportunity
For decades, the Blue Ridge Job Center in Marion has been a vital resource for Southwest Virginia workers. It’s been a place to find employment, receive job training, and access crucial support services. But now, that lifeline is being cut. The Blue Ridge Job Center, along with others in the region, is closing, leaving thousands of Virginians facing an uncertain future.
The Facts:
Impacted Students: Around 90 students currently attend the Job Center.
Job Losses: The closure would eliminate 70 jobs directly related to the Job Center’s operations.
Limited Alternatives: The nearest alternative Job Center is located in Bristol, TN, a significant distance for many residents, particularly those without reliable transportation.
Economic Impact: The closure exacerbates existing economic challenges in a region already struggling with high unemployment and poverty rates relative to the rest of the nation.
Lack of Transparency: The decision to close these Job Centers was made with limited public input and a lack of transparency regarding the rationale behind the closure. It was also an illegal attempt by the federal government to move Congressionally appropriated funds to dark slush funds like ICE, which exceeded its yearly budget by a billon within 5 months.
The Blue Ridge Job Center is a community hub.
It provided:
Job Search Assistance: Resume writing, interview preparation, job listings.
Training Programs: Skills development and career advancement opportunities.
Support Services: Access to resources for childcare, transportation, and other essential needs.
A Sense of Hope: A place where people could find encouragement and support during challenging times.
What We Can Do?
The pending closure of the Blue Ridge Job Center is a devastating blow to SWVA. When we win, we will:
Reopen the Marion Job Center: Advocate for the immediate reopening of the center and restoration of vital services, should it be shuttered.
Organize Locally: Work with local leaders to maintain and keep open the Center as long as possible until ideally a bill or budget can be passed.
Increase Funding for Workforce Development: Invest in programs that support job creation and skills training in Southwest Virginia.
Ensure Transparency and Public Input: Require greater transparency and public input in decisions that impact the region’s workforce, such as regular townhalls across the district.
Support Affected Workers: Provide resources and assistance to workers who have been displaced by the closure.
